Training is the backbone of the Sheffield Village Fire Department. When life safety is at risk, the competence of the responders is paramount. When the citizens in our community call for help, they expect and deserve the very best from us when we respond.

The importance of training cannot be overstated .

  • Training enables firefighters to learn new skills and techniques to make their jobs safer. Firefighters risk their lives to save others. However with the right training some of the risk to fire personnel can be managed.
  • Training enables firefighters to respond more efficiently, reducing the property damage caused by fires. This can be essential in situations where fire damage to the community could be substantial.
  • Training provides firefighters with needed experience.
  • Training keeps firefighters active and engaged.

The training required to become a certified firefighter in Ohio encompasses 360 hours of classroom work as well as practical training.  It will take a firefighter 1½ years to be trained and certified as a paramedic in the State of Ohio. Once certified, that firefighter/paramedic is required to obtain continuing education to maintain their State of Ohio firefighter II certification and State of Ohio paramedic certification.
